What Not To Give As A Gift This Holiday Season

The team at SuperGlass of Melbourne wishes you and yours the very best this Holiday season and in the New Year!

As we were talking about gifts we’re giving to family and friends, the topic of what “not” to give came up. Along with ugly sweaters and last year’s fruitcake, we thought we’d add this…

Your family member or friend had a rock fly up from the road and put a chip in their windshield. It’s the Holidays and you, being the kind, concerned person that you are, think you have the perfect gift idea: a do-it-yourself “chip repair kit.” They’ll love it!

We have three words of advice: Don’t Do It!!

While it’s great that you’re so thoughtful, you may actually be doing more harm than good; not just to the safety and integrity of the glass, but to your relationship with the gift receiver, should the repair not go well.

A chip or crack in a windshield requires trained technicians and the right material and tools to ensure the repair is done properly. Without them, you’re risking a lot of wasted time, money, and could comprise your or someone else’s safety.

There are three major aspects of windshield repair that are missing with a do-it-yourself kit:

Access: Most damage requires accessing the point of impact to insert a bonding resin. Without proper, high quality tools – which aren’t supplied in retail kits – to drill or probe, and access and fill the missing glass and any extended cracks or “legs,” the entire damage is deemed unrepaired.

Proper curing: A professional UV curing lamp is required for the glass to go through the proper temperature changes, expansion and contraction, and vibration during a curing period. A kit purchased off the shelf recommends curing the repair in sunlight, but the sun offers less than 10% of the strength of a professional UV lamp and none of the control to properly make the repair.

Training: Superglass Windshield Repair professionals go through comprehensive hands-on training before they can repair our customers’ windshields. They also participate in continuing education, as new and better products and processes are developed so they can always provide you with the best repair!

Windshield repair may not be rocket science, and here on the Space Coast we’re ok with that; we already have a lot of people who specialize in that. But it does require training, knowledge and expertise. Rather than risk damaging your windshield further, wasting your time or money, and possibly putting someone’s safety in jeopardy, leave it to the experts and call us!
