Why is it important to replace your windshield?
Windshield glass damage happens frequently, and windshield replacement is sometimes necessary. In fact, it is the second most common car insurance claim in the US[1]. While windshield glass chips and cracks may seem insignificant, it’s incredibly important to repair them as soon as possible. Here are6 reasons why your windshield should always be in top shape:
Maintaining clear vision on the road
It’s hard to be fully aware of your surroundings when a chip or crack is impeding your line of vision. Also, let’s face it, a cracked windshield is a continuous distraction.
Absorbing the impact on the airbags
Windshields are essential to absorbing the impact of an auto accident. This directly affects the front seat airbags. A cracked windshield will not be able to properly absorb the impact on the passenger airbags, probably leading to a failed airbag deployment.
Avoiding the possibility of passenger ejection
Windshields help protect passengers from outside forces such as wind, rain, road debris and especially severe car accidents. A compromised buffer can lead to passengers being ejected from the vehicle through the windshield.
Avoiding loss of structural support
Often overlooked, windshields are responsible for more than half of the structural integrity of the car in the event of a collision or rollover accident.
Avoiding traffic tickets
On top of what you’ll need to pay for windshield repair or replacement, beware that certain chips and cracks in the windshield can warrant a traffic ticket.
Avoiding greater costs down the road
Small and seemingly harmless chips and cracks often spread over time. For example, if dirt gets in the crack, there is no way to flush it out. If water gets in, it can delaminate the glass, freeze and turn tiny chips into long cracks. If damage is near the outer edge, it can weaken the entire windshield.
The longer you wait to repair your windshield, the more expensive and dangerous it may end up being. So remember, without delay is the easiest way!
