Smart windshields and ADAS calibration

Nowadays it’s becoming safer to be on the road. Technological innovations in the automobile industry are revolutionizing the driving experience day-by-day. Remember the old days of driving around with your map? Forget that! GPS has made it easier for drivers to get where they need to and sophisticated lane departure warnings keep vehicles in their lanes. With the arrival of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technology, driving is safer and even more “efficient” than ever.

What is ADAS?

ADAS is a type of technology that helps make driving safer through the use of cameras and/or sensors. The role of ADAS technology is to prevent deaths and injuries by reducing the number of collisions due to driver error, a leading cause of accidents.

Here is a list of safety-critical ADAS applications:

  • Pedestrian detection/avoidance
  • Lane departure warning/correction
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Blind spot detection

In order to provide all of these alerts, ADAS employs a range of sensors to help your car’s system identify what’s going on around your vehicle. Vehicles may use either information from one sensor or a combination of sensors through what is known as “sensor fusion.” What is key to understand is that ADAS sensors require precise calibration. If they are not calibrated correctly, the system will not function as designed to.

What interferes with ADAS functionality?

If you own a newer vehicle, chances are that you have a smart windshield with cameras and sensors connected to your auto glass. When you need a windshield repair or replacement, this system must be recalibrated to ensure that your safety features are still working correctly.

In addition, there are several other factors that  can interfere with the alignment and functionality of cameras and sensors in your car such as getting new tires, getting in an accident (even if there was no auto glass damage), installing aftermarket accessories, being involved in a minor fender bender and etc.

Anything that moves your ADAS cameras and sensors out of their position can cause problems with the functionality of the system.

Recalibration of Smart Windshields

If you notice that your safety systems are not performing as usual, it may be time to take your vehicle in for ADAS recalibration. And of course, anticipate having this service performed as well, when you need a windshield repair or replacement.

Depending on your vehicle manufacturer’s requirements, your vehicle may require either static recalibration, dynamic recalibration, or both. Static recalibration is an in-shop procedure. Dynamic recalibration entails driving your vehicle on well-marked roadways with portable calibration tools plugged in.
