Car Insurance Coverage After Hurricane Damage

Hurricane damage to roadway

Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian is the fifth strongest hurricane to make landfall in the US. Storm surges, powerful winds and flash floods were all part of the category 4 hurricane. It is estimated to have caused more than $60 billion in private insured losses just in Florida alone, making it the second largest disaster loss event on record per the Insurance Information Institute. Unfortunately, there are still two months left of this hurricane season, which runs through Nov. 30. And according to Keith Wolfe of the Swiss Re Group, hurricanes now behave in a very different way once they come to shore compared to what has been observed in the past 20 years. Therefore, preparation and the right insurance are critical to protect your family and investment.

Will Your Car Insurance Fix the Damage?

You are probably wondering if your auto insurer will pay to repair damages to your car? The answer depends on the type of insurance that you have. If you have comprehensive coverage, your car insurance will cover hurricane damage.  Comprehensive insurance is not required by law (check out our post on No-fault insurance link to: https://superglass321.com/pros-and-cons-of-no-fault-insurance/), it is an optional coverage that protects against damage to your vehicle caused by non-collision events that are outside of your control. Comprehensive coverage includes protection for the following losses:

  • Vandalism
  • Theft
  • Hail/lightning
  • Weather or flood damage

There are different ways in which a hurricane or tropical storm could harm your car, including:

  • An uprooted tree or branch lands on your car
  • Strong winds flip your car
  • Unsecured items hit your auto
  • Wind damage
  • Water damage
  • Corrosion caused by saltwater exposure
  • ●      Mechanical damage caused by water exposure

Your auto insurance should cover each of these scenarios, as long as the damage is the result of the storm. However, please note that to be protected after damage caused by a hurricane, you need to have comprehensive coverage on your insurance policy prior to an active storm warning in your area.
